Andre McDonald shows off his athleticism.
Today we had a chance to sit down with Gophers true freshman wide receiver Andre McDonald and talk how the season has been going so far and and his thoughts on the rivalry game vs. Wisconsin this weekend.
McDonald has 5 receptions for 40 yards this season. However, this past Saturday he recorded a career high 4 receptions for 33 yards against Northwestern. Before last Saturday’s game his last reception was against UNLV. With the receiving core banged up, specifically Isaac Fruechte and Devin Crawford-Tufts this week, expect McDonald to see more action against the Badgers.
Coach Matt Limegrover on increasing McDonald’s role with other receivers being injured…
“Andre had a good game on Saturday. There’s a trust that gets built up as you see a kid produce not only in practice but goes on and produces in the game. Less of the fact that those guys are banged up, and more of the fact that Andre played a good game and did some good things when he was in there. That’s more a sign that he is going to play more than necessarily just because of injuries.”
Gopher Hole: How do you think the season has gone so far?
Andre McDonald: It’s going great. We’re winning, we got a winning record, and we’re all having fun. We’re playing for Coach Kill right now.
Gopher Hole: How has it been so far being the hometown kid and playing for your hometown team in general?
Andre McDonald: It’s always good to be able to play in front of a crowd that you’re familiar with. It’s nice that my parents are here to support and I have that to fall back on if anything goes wrong.
Gopher Hole: You kind of had a limited role the first couple games being injured and having an illness. Last week you had a solid game with 4 receptions for 33 yards. How excited are you to try to build on that this weekend?
Andre McDonald: I just want to win. Whatever I got to do to win, whatever I got to pitch in, I just want to win, and I’m ready to win.
Gopher Hole: Is there different preparation for the Wisconsin game this weekend, especially since it’s a rivalry game?
Andre McDonald: It’s a rivalry game so it’s going to be pretty heated between us. I mean every game is important to all of us so there’s not a bigger emphasis on this game over the others.
Gopher Hole: Who’s your favorite NFL player?
Andre McDonald: Megatron. (Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson).
