As GopherHole.com continues to look at potential recruits for the 2010 recruiting class, Nick Walsh heads back to the Academy of Holy Angels, where he was able to catch up with 6’2”, 190 LB junior wide receiver Denny McMahon during the Gopher football team’s spring game at the University of St. Thomas.
NW: Is this your first visit to Minnesota today?
DM: Yeah, this is my first unofficial visit to Minnesota.
NW: Have you been getting letters from anyone else besides the “U”?
DM: Yeah, I’ve gotten a lot from Stanford, Purdue, Iowa, Wisconsin, and then almost every Ivy League school.
NW: A little more academic side of things…grades are alright I would assume?
DM: Yeah, I got a 3.5, and I got a 26 on the ACT, so I think that’s appealing to a lot of the academic schools.
NW: So are you looking at going the academic school route, or if you got a Big Ten offer or two would you go that way?
DM: It would have to depend…I probably would go with the Big Ten offer, because they offer full scholarships, whereas the Ivy League schools don’t offer full scholarships, and it costs a lot of money go to go there.
NW: What did you think of the spring game?
DM: I thought it was awesome…a lot of key players stepped up, like Stoudamire, and then Marquis Gray was second string, but he was awesome, with two touchdowns. He’s got a cannon for an arm, so he’s pretty good.
NW: Have you gotten to see the new stadium?
DM: Yeah, it was awesome! I like how it’s a horseshoe, and I love the locker room…it’s got to be the nicest one in America, so I’m pretty pumped for it.
NW: How does that change your thoughts, as opposed to being in the dome?
DM: Well, I know it’s going to bring a lot of recruits in, because the dome is really un-appeasing – no one really wants to go play in a dome, but now that they’re getting a new stadium, it’s a lot more attractive to the University of Minnesota, and I know it will draw more recruits there.
NW: What do you think of Holy Angels’ chances this year in football?
DM: I think last year we were missing some key positions, but we had a lot of talent. It was definitely a disappointment last year, but I think we’ll do a lot better this year.
