One area of need that Coach Tim Brewster is addressing for the Gophers’ 2009 recruiting class is the offensive line, and Minnesota added an important piece of the puzzle recently with the commitment of Brooks Michel. At 6-7, 280lbs, the Carmel (Indiana) High School visited The U for the annual Gopher spring game and then gave his commitment to Brewster a couple of days ago over North Carolina State. Michel recently took time out of his busy summer schedule to chat with GopherHole.com about his decision to commit to Minnesota, his thoughts about playing in the spread offense and what parts of his game he’s working on as he gears up for his senior year of high school.

Each year the Gopher football team hosts high school kids from around the region at its annual camp, which gives Coach Brewster and his staff the opportunity to scout first hand athletes that could wear the maroon and gold one day. The hope is to find an up-and-coming sophomore or junior, or that diamond in the rough that will make an impact in Dinkytown a few years down the road. And that is exactly what the coaches believe they have in the Nick Rengel, the most recent Gopher commit. Rengel, a 6-3, 225lb athlete from Sartell, Minnesota, gave Coach Brewster and Coach Lewis a verbal commitment after getting a scholarship offer earlier this week. The football and track star couldn’t pass up the opportunity to live out a life long dream, and jumped at the opportunity to become the fourth in-state recruit in the Gophers’ 2009 class.

One of many accomplishments in Tim Brewster’s much acclaimed first recruiting class is the “Skyline 4” – four stud recruits out of Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas. One of the anchors of this group is Spencer Reeves, a 6-1, 205lb linebacker that chose the Gophers over offers from Wisconsin, Texas Tech, Arkansas, Kansas State and Arizona. Many expect Reeves to come in and compete for immediate playing time and hope that he can be counted on turning one of the nation’s worst defenses that the Gophers touted in 2007. Reeves recently chatted with GopherHole about his expectations for the upcoming season, the opportunity to play with some of his best friends and high school teammates and his goal of getting Gopher Nation to Pasadena.

When Tim Brewster brought Mike Dunbar to Dinkytown to run the Gopher offense, Minnesota fans knew there were in for a change. Long gone was the smash mouth run it up the gut football in favor of the receiver-friendly “spread” offense. Dunbar is oft-regarded as one of the pioneers of the spread offense and Gopher Nation is eager to get the appropriate personnel into Dinkytown to execute the potent offense. One of the key components of this offense is athletic and versatile wide receivers and the Gophers took a big step towards this with the recent addition of Victor Keise III. The 6-2, 170lb Coral Springs, Florida native recently gave his oral commitment on a visit with his father to The U. The Gophers hope to add two wide receivers in the class of 2009, and Keise was eager to jump at the opportunity for a world class education, an opportunity to rebuild the Gopher program and add to the excitement of spending his entire career at the new TCF Bank Stadium. Keise and his father, recently spent time talking with GopherHole about the decision to play for the Gophers, the goals they have and the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing college football at the highest level.
